Robin Hood not giving up despite going bust

The head of Styrian airline Robin Hood Aviation said the company’s plan was to continue making business despite news today (Mon) that it had filed for bankruptcy.

Georg Pommer said he was optimistic about making profits by June if passenger figures remained stable.

The announcement comes after Creditors Associations KSV and AKV said the firm, which is based in Feldkirchen bei Graz, has filed for bankruptcy. Officials form the Commercial Court in Graz announced Robin Hood Aviation had debts of around 3.3 million Euros, adding that 24 employees and around 115 creditors were affected.

The company was founded in 2005 and offers connections between Graz and Linz to Zurich, Switzerland, and Stuttgart, Germany.

Robin Hood Aviation hit the headlines last month when weekly magazine profil revealed eleven people were dismissed under unclear circumstances.

Pommer rubbished the report and claimed he had "a clear conscience". He branded profil’s article as being full of "malevolent accusations" and stressed that an employer had rights too. Pommer said some of the mentioned former staff were dismissed "over the most extreme forms of misconduct" such as theft and planned fraud.

The Robin Hood Aviation CEO has for years spearheaded a campaign against the federal government’s actions over Austrian Airlines (AUA). The government bolstered AUA with around 500 million Euros in tax payers’ money last year – before it was taken over by German aviation company Lufthansa.

AUA currently carries out what company bosses describe as an "essential cost-cutting and efficiency scheme" to get back in the black. Hundreds of employees in its technical and cargo departments were dismissed recently, with hundreds more expected to follow over the next few months.

Speaking about what had brought his firm into difficulties, Pommer today named "difficulties in establishing" Robin Hood Aviation, "effects of the economic crisis" and disadvantages in competing with "aviation companies subsided by the state".

He also revealed plans to extend the number of connections from next month.

The bankruptcy of Robin Hood Aviation is the third in six years of an airline based in the province of Styria after Fairline Luftfahrt and Styrian Airways AG went bust in 2004 and 2006 respectively. Pommer was CEO of Fairline Luftfahrt while he also was involved in setting up Styrian Airways AG.
