Gebrüder Weiss remains firm despite dropping turnover

Vorarlberg freighting firm Gebrüder Weiss is putting on a brave face after reporting today (Weds) it had seen turnover drop 15.7 per cent year on year to 830 million Euros in 2009.

Board chairman Wolfgang Niessner said that results had been "clearly positive," given the difficult economic conditions last year.

He added that the firm had been able to continue its planned long-term investment and strengthen its presence in central, eastern and southeastern Europe and India. It invested 30 million Euros last year compared to 49 million in 2008.

Board member Heinz Senger-Weiss said the firm had 15 offices in the Indian sub-continent after its acquisition of Tricon Shipping and its change of name to Weiss-Röhlig India.

The firm announced last November that it had acquired a 75 per cent interest in Serb competitor Eurocargo. Niessner said the deal highlighted the firm’s aim to become a force in the CEE region.

Gebrüder Weiss, based in Lauterach in Bregenz district, has 137 offices around the world. But the family-owned firm has had to tighten its belt and in 2009 lay off 37 workers and 175 apprentices.
