Supermarket chain Billa is involved in an online row via social networking sites with customers over the use of cloned cards that allow customers to gain access to discounts without the need to provide private data.
Many supermarket chains in Austria including not just Billa but also Merkur or Bipa offer significant discounts to customers during the week in exchange for them giving personal data including telephone numbers and email addresses so that they can get a discount card.
But many people object to providing the private information in order to get the card, and instead some have been getting round this request by having a so-called anonymous card generated by the webseite "nocard.info" – something that Billa staff branded as fraud in a recent Twitter posting.
They said that it was not only illegal but also possibly actionable under law.
But the threat caused a furious reaction in particular from those who said they want to protect their private data from the supermarket chains that they accused of selling on.
