Teacher sues student after her chair collapses in class

A retired teacher from Carinthia is suing her former pupil for compensation after he manipulated her chair causing it to collapse during class.

The incident occurred in May 2011 at a secondary modern school in St. Veit an der Glan. The pupil who was 15 at the time of the incident is accused of manipulating his teacher's chair in such a way that it later collapsed when his teacher sat down.

Following the incident the teacher was left with fears of a lasting slipped disc problem and she is suing the student under civil law for damages of 10,000 euros. She is also suing the headmaster saying that he had known that the chair was unstable and chose to do nothing about it.

The incident happened in front of an entire class and was also captured on film. From the footage it is clear that the student had indeed manipulated the chair.

The teacher and headteacher have both retired and the student no longer attends the secondary modern school in question.
