A starfish mystery causing havoc in the aquariums at Vienna's Haus des Meeres (House of the Sea) was resolved with the help of local pupils.
The starfish have recently proliferated so considerably that they have now become trouble in the Aquariums. Particularly delicate sun-corals have become the latest victims of hungry starfish of the "Asterina" variety.
In the context of the "Kids Participation in Science" -Programme and in partnership with university of Vienna professor Monika Bright, the starfish travelled to Viennese schools, where pupils monitored their feeding behaviour to try and find out what a starfish's favourite meal might be.
The fact that the starfish wrap their stomach around their food when eating was not unknown, but their favourite food was a mystery.
To answer this question, the children organised and carried out several experiments. They tested dried fish-food, lettuce and tubifex worms. There was originally concern that the experiment would take too long and not give clear results because starfish eat so slowly. In the end however, the result quickly became clear – the starfishes' favourite meal is worms.
Following this experiment, the Haus des Meeres will only be feeding the starfish a strict diet of worms – they said the help of the pupils in resolving the mystery was enormous and that these are free to help out in the future too.
