There were record 35 kilometre tailbacks on the Tauern motorway in Salzburg on Saturday as thousands of Germans headed south at the start of their children’s summer vacation.
The jam leading into the Tauern tunnel in the morning left some drivers stuck for six hours.
The jam extended back to a motorway intersection in Salzburg’s Pongau at its longest and had only shrunk to 15 kilometres by late morning.
Friday was the last day of school for kids in the German states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.
