Cellar girl Natascha Kampusch has suffered a nervous breakdown amid growing rumours about her eight-year captivity, according to a report.
Austrian daily Österreich claims the 21-year-old broke down after recent comments by Ludwig Adamovich, head of a special commission to check on possible police failures and cover-ups in the investigation of her kidnapping.
Adamovich said in a recent interview: "The time Kampusch was imprisoned might have been better for her than what she experienced before. This is likely, especially since it is known her mother did not treat her that carefully."
Österreich reported Kampusch, who was snatched off the street on her way to school aged ten by pervert Wolfgang Priklopil, suffered a breakdown and has withdrawn herself from the public completely. Kampusch’s lawyer Gerald Ganzger said in reaction to the statement by Adamovich: "This is pure speculation and not comprehensible to me. I don’t understand how he can make such a suggestion."
Adamovich recently caused controversy when he accused the state prosecution of "pretending to be asleep" and revealed there were still unanswered questions in connection with the case.
Earlier this week it emerged that the probe into possible cover-ups and police blunders in the case has been taken over by Austria's highest state prosecution body – the Oberstaatsanwaltschaft.
The news also follows July’s extraordinary move to involve the state prosecution of the city of Graz to act as an independent body in the investigation.
Werner Pleischl, who heads Vienna’s state prosecution which until July had sole responsibility for the investigation, announced the switch and confirmed the role of the Graz prosecution service.
He said: "Due to the importance of the case, the state prosecution of Vienna will take over and ask the Justice Ministry to engage Thomas Mühlbacher, the chief state prosecutor of Graz, to be assigned as well since he dealt with the case in the past."
Justice Ministry spokeswoman Katharina Swoboda also said: "Thomas Mühlbacher will stay involved with the case."
Mühlbacher had been assigned to head investigations for four weeks from the beginning of July. His new assignment is indefinite.
It also emerged that the special police group "SoKo Kampusch" has re-started its investigations and will soon interview several witnesses. The special commission led by Adamovich, former president of the Austrian Constitutional Court and a legal advisor of Austrian president Heinz Fischer, will deliver its second preliminary report next month.
