A Vienna woman found dead in her boyfriend’s bed yesterday (Weds) morning died of a brain haemorrhage, police have said.
Police spokeswoman Karin Strycek said preliminary results of an autopsy had confirmed the cause of death but that it was still unclear whether a wound found on the back of Irene K.’s head had been the result of a fall or a fight with her boyfriend.
Strycek added the woman also had broken nasal bones.
The woman’s boyfriend, an unemployed 39-year-old man identified as Martin A., had called police at 7:30am yesterday morning and said he had found his 33-year-old girlfriend’s lifeless body in his bed when he awoke in his one-room apartment on Lampigasse in Vienna-Leopoldstadt. He was later taken into custody by the police.
Strycek said questioning of the man had produced little information since he insisted he couldn’t remember much. She added police were examining the evidence found in the man’s apartment and questioning his neighbours.
Martin A. had told police yesterday the woman had consumed alcohol and pills the previous evening but he had taken only sleeping pills.
Police had found empty medication containers and bottles of alcohol in the apartment.
Neighbours told the police the couple had frequently quarrelled and physically attacked one another. Neighbour Christian P. said: "I often saw police officers in the hallway because of a fight between the two of them. There was always a fuss."
