Cyclist killed in Lower Austria

By David Rogers

A 62-year-old cyclist was killed when he rode into a hole in the road and was sent hurtling over his handlebars yesterday (Thurs) in Lower Austria’s Weinviertel.

The provincial security directorate said today the man, from Mistelbach, had braked as he cycled on a road in the direction of Kleinhadersdorf and rode into the hole and was thrown off his biked.

He was killed instantly.

It has not been disclosed whether the man had been wearing a helmet.

The Committee for Traffic Safety (KfV) reported in June that 4,300 Austrian cyclists, including 1,800 children under 14, suffered head injuries annually and 65 per cent of cyclists did not wear helmets.
