Storms ravage Styria

Parts of some Styrian towns had to be evacuated yesterday (Thurs) as more bad weather battered the province.

The Schwanberg area in Deutschlandsberg district, Leoben district and provincial capital Graz were worst affected by severe storms.

Police and fire fighters had to clear mud and rock from landslides off the L649 highway and some town streets in the Schwanberg area and three houses had to be evacuated in Feldbaum amid fears of more landslides.

Carports, sheds and gardens in St. Stefan in Leoben district were damaged by landslides and flooding made the L132 highway impassable near St. Marein im Mürztal in Bruck/Mur district.

The Schöckelbach River in the northern part of Graz – which had already suffered severe flooding on several occasions this past summer - overflowed its banks for several hours despite sandbagging but did not flood basements or underground parking garages.

Heavy rainfall last month in parts of eastern and southern Styria caused widespread flooding and landslides.
