Freezing rain causes crashes in Upper Austria

By David Rogers

The sudden onset of freezing rain yesterday (Sun) afternoon caused a number of accidents on the Mühlkreis motorway (A7) in Upper Austria.

Police said today the accidents, which had occurred near Engerwitzdorf in Urfahr-Umgebung district, had resulted in injuries to four people.

Police added a man, 53, from Wels, was driving from Linz to Freistadt when the freezing rain began. His car skidded, hit the barrier diving the motorway, turned over and came to rest on its roof.

A car driven by an Italian, 34, then skidded into the overturned car. The man and his companion, a 25-year-old woman from Engerwitzdorf, were taken by rescuers to a nearby hospital.

A car driven by an 18-year-old man from Vienna skidded into a guard rail, as did one driven by a 28-year-old man from St. Johann im Pongau in Salzburg province.

The St. Johann man and his 43-year-old female companion from Wels were also taken to hospital. A dog that had been in their car was taken to an animal home in Linz.
