Austrian arrested for drug-smuggling in India

By Thomas Hochwarter

An Austrian suspected of drug smuggling has been arrested in India, the Austrian Foreign Ministry confirmed today (Weds).

Ministry spokesman Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal said: "A 56-year-old Austrian man was arrested for possessing hashish."

Launsky-Tieffenthal said a Swiss citizen and a Pole who had been accompanying the Austrian had also been put in detention.

The newspaper "The Times of India" reported the trio possessed 43 kilograms of the drug.

The Austrian Foreign Ministry said it had no detailed information about the arrest, adding it was trying to give the Austrian legal support.
