Non-explosive WWII ordnance uncovered in Hallein

By David Rogers

Workers digging near a motorway approach road in Hallein, Salzburg, yesterday (Tues) uncovered a 75-kilo World War II bomb and six stick-type incendiary bombs.

Experts called to the scene said the ordnance - of US manufacture - was no longer capable of exploding since all fuses had separated from the bombs, which were quite rusty.

Police said there had been no danger to local residents at any time.

They noted that Hallein, especially the area around its railway station, had been an important target of Allied bombing during World War II.
