Austria’s Student Union (ÖH) has been accused of subsidising vandalism after a weekend decision to make 100,000 Euros from last year’s reserve available to protesting students at Austrian universities.
A student group called AktionsGemeinschaft (AG) – which is believed to be close to the People’s Party (ÖVP) – said today (Mon) that the money constituted the "subsidisation and tolerance of property damage."
The group called the decision "a declaration of the bankruptcy of the leftist ÖH minority executive" and claimed the student occupation of the Audimax hall at Vienna University had already caused damages of more than 100,000 Euros.
ÖH had said the money would go to all protesting students, not just those in Vienna. It said the protestors would have to formally apply for financial support just as they would have to in the case of a project.
It has also emerged that supplies are being sent to protesting students from Germany. A bus left Kiel University to visit other German towns to collect supplies of food, newspapers and toilet paper and is expected to reach Salzburg at 4pm tomorrow and Vienna at 8pm.
Meanwhile Vienna University rector’s council has asked ÖH to name representatives for a plenary meeting with ÖVP Science Minister Johannes Hahn on 25 November. The council said it would invite those representatives to preparatory meetings leading to Hahn’s plenary.
The council also told teachers to ensure classrooms and their keys were properly secured after classes to prevent any more halls from being occupied.
Austrian cabaret performers Dirk Stermann and Christoph Grissemann will appear live tomorrow at the Audimax during their TV programme "Willkommen Österreich" (Welcome Austria).
The news comes just days after tens of thousands of students took to the streets last Thursday demanding free education with marches in Vienna and demonstrations in Salzburg.
President Heinz Fischer has called on students to meet minister Hahn for talks.
Meanwhile, a poll by the Linz research institute IMAS of 500 people older than 16 this week showed that 86 per cent of Austrians supported fewer university admissions and the adoption of entrance examinations. Ninety-six per cent said they were aware of student protests.
