Terror suspects arrested as part of Europe-wide swoop

By Lisa Chapman

Two suspected terrorists were arrested in Austria yesterday (Thurs) as police across Europe swooped on an alleged Algerian terror network.

Interior Ministry spokesman Rudolf Gollia said today the two suspects were a 40-year-old Algerian and a 44-year-old Austrian citizen of Algerian background.

One was arrested in his Vienna apartment and the other in Lower Austria, he added.

Gollia said police had arrested 17 suspected Algerian terrorists in a number of European countries yesterday. Italian police had begun an investigation of the group in 2004, and Austrian police had joined them in 2006.

He said the suspects were accused of fencing, illegal immigration and falsification of documents and engaged in assaults and break-ins to acquire money for their group.

Italian media have reported some of those arrested are on a UN anti-terror list.
