Pensioner killed by train in front of wife

A 74-year-old was killed instantly when he tried to cross a level crossing as a train approached.
His wife watched on in horror as he was hit by the locomotive near Drösing station in Gänserndorf district, Lower Austria, today (Weds).
His wife had to be hospitalised with shock after the incident.
It is unclear whether he knew the train was approaching when he tried to cross the rail tracks.
The accident comes just a day after a farmer in the province was killed when his tractor was hit by a train at a level crossing in Bruck an der Leitha district.
According to police, the 47-year-old man had tried to cross the tracks in Haslau an der Donau despite signals warning of an approaching train. He died shortly after the accident despite an ambulance team being on the scene within minutes.
