Newspapers sentenced for 'gay Haider' reports

By Thomas Hochwarter

Austrian and German media have been banned from making claims that late right-wing leader Jörg Haider was gay.

Austrian daily Österreich reported today (Thurs) it has been served with an interim injunction for "breach of personal and privacy rights of Dr Jörg Haider" after publishing a story based on reports by German newspaper Bild and Austrian magazine News last month.

In the article, a male 31-year-old Carinthian waiter claimed to be the lover of the former Freedom Party (FPÖ) leader who was killed when he crashed his car at high speed after a drunken night out in October 2008.

Österreich claimed Bild and News were also given the same ban by Graz provincial court after the late Carinthian governor’s widow Claudia took legal action over the reports.

The Austrian newspaper also said the court threatened fines of 100,000 Euros if the publications ignore the ban, adding all three publications planned to object the verdict.

Meanwhile 90,050 Euros have so far been offered as the top bid for a Porsche 911 Targa owned by Haider between 2002 and 2004 in an online auction set up by a Carinthian businessman. The auction – held at www.cavinnash.at – will end this Sunday.

So much for freedom of the press. Oh well freedom of the press has been affecting many countries. Telling the truth gets them in hot water. How sad. Then again we also don't even have freedom of thought any more. We are all suppose to just shut up and accept things whether they are true or not. Don't question or you go to jail. Pathetic.
