Second swine flu death in Austria

Swine flu has claimed its second victim on Austrian soil after a 41-year-old German died in a Salzburg hospital last night (Thurs/Fri).

Health officials said today the Bavarian passed away at Salzburg Provincial Clinic after a sudden brain haemorrhage.

He had been hospitalised after showing symptoms of swine flu more than three weeks ago and been kept in an artificial coma for most of that time, doctors said.

But his condition suddenly improved at the beginning of this week, and doctors had moved him to a different department of the hospital before he died.

An autopsy will now be carried out.

The German’s death come after an 11-year-old girl from South Tyrol, Italy, died after contracting the virus in an Innsbruck clinic earlier this month.

Health officials recently reported a Romanian construction worker had been a victim of the disease too, but later announced that the 39-year-old died from a heart attack.

The Austrian Health Ministry recently said they believed between 30,000 and 45,000 people currently had swine flu and warned Austria was on the verge of a pandemic.

Vaccination centres set up in all provinces and cities have been inundated.

Officials have repeated statements that Austria is well-prepared to deal with the disease.
