Special underground patrols target thousands of suspects

More than ten thousand people have been questioned in special underground patrols launched by Vienna police, it emerged today (Thurs).

Police said today 10,584 people had been stopped during the patrols on U-bahn trains which began in September.

Police spokesman Mandred Hejl said officers had arrested two suspected burglars and one man suspected of assault following the patrols.

They added 499 people had been detained in total, most of them on suspicion of failure to pay fines for parking violations or drunk driving.

Hejl said police had issued 462 citations, around 400 of which had been for drug offences. He added police had confiscated 900 grams of heroin, 1,070 grams of cocaine, 4.2 kilos of cannabis and a large number of drug tablets, as well as weapons including knives and gas pistols.

Police General Karl Mahrer said the patrols would continue: "The operations have increased control pressure in the drug scene and raised passengers’ subjective feelings of security."

He added 100 uniformed and undercover police were conducting daily patrols of the Vienna underground.
