Judges warn of action over staff numbers

The president of the Austrian judges association has warned judges will take action if People’s Party (ÖVP) Justice Minister Claudia Bandion-Ortner fails to honour an agreement on taking on more staff in the justice system.

Werner Zinkl said today (Fri) the association had recently reached an agreement with Bandion-Ortner that she would accept the conclusions of an association study of the need for more personnel in the justice system.

The study concluded that the system needed an additional 187 judges and 43 public prosecutors, according to a report in today’s edition of the newspaper Salzburger Nachrichten.

But he warned that if nothing were done to deal with the lack of personnel, judges would take action.

"We have already decided what to do. But, like the Indians, we will not say when we will act," he said.
