Driver and passengers hurt in tram derailment

By David Rogers

A tram driver was hospitalised when her tram derailed and skidded 30 metres down a pavement in Vienna yesterday (Sun).

Police said the line 26 tram derailed on a curve in Vienna-Floridsdorf near the intersection of Prager Straße and Rußbergstraße, at 10:30am, finally coming to a stop just centimetres away from a shop.

The driver suffered back injuries and broken bones while four passengers were slightly injured in the incident, which police believe was caused by a technical fault.

Traffic was closed off in the area and public-transport agency Wiener Linien provided an alternative bus service for passengers.
