Italy to extradite Austrian embezzlement lawyer

By William Green

A Salzburg lawyer wanted for embezzling 2.65 million Euros is to be extradited from Italy, it was announced today (Mon).

The Italian government will extradite Friedrich L., 58, and partner Brigitte H., 40, to Austria by 4 January, his attorney Raimund Danner said.

He added the Italian Justice Ministry would hand the pair over to the Austrian police at the Brenner Pass but that the exact date for the extradition had not yet been set.

Friedrich L., who has been in detention for five months in Italy, is facing ten years in jail over the embezzlement.

He is being held in custody in Florence while Brigitte H., suspected of being his accomplice, is under house arrest in Arezzo.

The pair left Austria in October 2001 but were arrested by Italian police on 30 July 2009 near Florence.

Danner said he hoped for a mild sentence for his client since he had confessed to his crime, been cooperative and pledged to do everything possible to replace the embezzled funds.
