Policeman who killed boy to be tried

A policeman who shot and killed a 14-year-old in a supermarket is to be tried for manslaughter, it has been announced.

Florian P. was shot dead in the dark in a Krems supermarket on the night of 5 August 2009 after two police officers responding to an alarm claimed they were about to be attacked by him an accomplice.

The pair’s "weapons" were later revealed as a screwdriver and a garden hoe and the dead teenager’s pal, Roland T., 17, said he and Florian P. had been running away when the officers opened fire.

Roland T. was later jailed for 18 months for breaking into the supermarket.

Karl Schober, the head of the public prosecutor’s office in Korneuburg, Lower Austria, announced the news of the trial last night (Mon/Tues), adding that the policeman could receive up to three years in prison if convicted.

Schober said the officer had not been in a dangerous situation and had therefore acted negligently. But he added proceedings against the policewoman who had shot and injured Roland T. would be dropped since she had reacted properly to an emergency situation.

Both officers went back to work shortly after the shootings which sparked public outrage.

It has since been reported that Roland T., who had a criminal record, had grown up in the Krems community of Lerchenfeld, which has been dubbed the town’s "ghetto" by some media and residents, while Florian P. also lived there.
