Private broadcaster ATV has sensationally secured the rights to screen an eagerly awaited documentary on Natascha Kampusch’s eight-year cellar ordeal.
Bosses at the Vienna-based station announced today (Fri) the production called "Natascha Kampusch – 3.096 Tage Gefangenschaft" (Natascha Kampusch – 3,096 Days in Captivity) would be aired on 25 January at 9:50pm.
German national broadcaster ARD has meanwhile said it would screen the 45-minute documentary from 9pm on the same day.
It was expected Austrian broadcaster ORF would agree to cooperate with ARD over screening the programme simultaneously as the stations have liaised on various other issues. ORF executives have not made clear whether they negotiated for the rights to screen the documentary in the Austrian market.
ATV’s announcement is nevertheless regarded as the latest blow for struggling ORF, which reported a record-low overall market share of 36.8 per cent of households with cable and satellite TV last year.
The documentary is expected to deliver new revelations in the case as Kampusch opened the doors of the house she was kept in for more than eight years to the film team.
The 21-year-old acquired the estate in Strasshof an der Nordbahn just a few kilometres outside Vienna shortly after her escape on 23 August 2006 to ensure it would not "fall into the wrong hands".
Kampusch recently said she was considering filling up the basement chamber built by pervert jailer Wolfgang Priklopil that she had been locked in with concrete.
Austrian authorities only last week ended investigations of the case restarted last year to clarify claims police had not thoroughly checked on tip-offs that could have led to kidnapper Priklopil. Prosecutors said they could rule out that the sick loner had had accomplices.
