Two Bulgarians have been arrested after trying to smuggle more than 35,000 cartons of cigarettes to the UK.
Police announced yesterday (Mon) that two Bulgarian brothers trying to smuggle cigarettes through Austria had been arrested on Sunday by customs officials in Nickelsdorf in Burgenland’s Neusiedl am See district.
Customs officials mounted intensive controls Sunday at border crossings to combat cigarette smuggling during heavy traffic at the end of the semester break holiday.
They stopped the articulated lorry in which the Bulgarians, aged 54 and 61, were riding at 6pm and questioned them about their cargo. They said it consisted of corn and oak flakes destined for supermarkets in Belgium and France.
Officials using scanning devices and dogs uncovered the contraband. The truck had a load of 35,827 cartons of cigarettes destined for the UK.
The Bulgarians are being held in custody in Eisenstadt.
