Linz court acquits all 1 May demonstrators

All the demonstrators arrested on 1 May 2009 in Linz for alleged attacks on police have been acquitted, with the last being formally acquitted yesterday (Thurs)

Linz’ regional appellate court released the 18-year-old man and cancelled the fine imposed on him for allegedly resisting arrest.

The court said surveillance camera footage of what had happened had shown no evidence of criminal behaviour on the demonstrators’ part.

Several hundred people participated in the "action committee 1 May" demonstration under observation of around 100 policemen.

They prevented 50 masked demonstrators from proceeding farther, and things got out of hand when police tried to establish their identity, with injuries on both sides.

Police arrested five people, including Rainer Zendron, the vice rector of Linz’ Arts University.

Vanessa Gaigg and Christian Diabl, spokespeople for the Association against Police Violence, said it was high time the police allegations were rejected and added they were waiting for the results of an investigation into the police’s behaviour on 1 May by the Interior Ministry’s Office of Internal Affairs (BIA).

Linz Greens called for an apology from the People’s Party (ÖVP). Its former fraction chief on the city council had called the demonstrators "rowdies" and said the party would oppose any more subsidies for organisations that had organised the Association against Police Violence.

Green fraction chief Gerda Lenger called the ÖVP official’s comments "an anti-democratic jump to conclusions."
