Blaze kills 190 pigs in Carinthia
A fire killed 190 pigs on Saturday afternoon in Köstendorf in Carinthia’s Gail Valley, police said.
A neighbour saw thick smoke pouring out of the pigs’ sty at 3pm and sounded the alarm. Over 120 firemen responded to the alarm, but the fire spread at lightning speed, and the pigs perished from smoke inhalation before firemen could get to them.
They were able to rescue 10 pigs which were housed at a neighbour’s farm.
Florian Jost from the fire department in Hermagor said they didn’t know the cost of the damage yet but added it would be huge.
Police and firemen are investigating the cause of the blaze.
