Police confiscate French couple's animals

Styrian police confiscated 12 undernourished dogs and a pot-bellied pig they found in a vehicle owned by a French couple moving from Bulgaria to Hungary today (Tues).

Police said the couple, who described themselves as animal lovers, had claimed they had taken the dogs off the street to give them a home and wanted to give them to people who wanted pets.

The couple also said they had taken the pig with them when they had moved from France to Bulgaria. The police informed them it was illegal to transport a pig without the required papers because of the danger of swine flu.

An Austrian animal protection organisation is caring for the animals that police confiscated and hopes to find homes for them.

Police also confiscated the couple’s vehicle as unfit for use in Austria owing to its dilapidated condition.

In a similar case last month, Styrian police discovered 47 puppies stashed in a Slovak van during a routine motorway traffic check on the southern motorway (A2).

Cops said the animals were being transported in cardboard boxes found on the car’s floor.

The 31-year-old driver is facing animal cruelty charges after admitting driving nonstop for hours on his way to Spain.

A vet said the man had five King Charles Spaniels, one Jack Russell Terrier, eight miniature Pinscher, four Pomeranians, one French Bulldog, four Chihuahuas, three wire-haired dachshunds, 20 Maltese and one Labrador. He said the youngest dogs were just five weeks old.

The dogs were handed over to an animal shelter in the province.
