New express passport to cost €220

The new Austrian express passport, ready 24 hours after application, starts on 15 March will cost 220 Euros for adults.

People’s Party (ÖVP) Interior Minister Maria Fekter said today (Fri) express passports for children younger than 12 would cost 165 Euros, adding that express passports could be obtained at any passport office.

The ministry said such quick processing of passport applications was more expensive than normal processing, hence the express passport’s cost.

It added that an Austrian who applied for one would receive it on the next working day and it would be valid indefinitely and accepted by all countries.

The ministry said 1.2 million passports would become invalid in 2010, with around 600,000 expiring between March and May.
