A defective cable caused an electricity outage in Vienna-Leopoldstadt this morning (Tues) for about one hour, said energy supplier Wien Energie.
A defective cable between Handelskai and Engerthstraße caused the outage which lasted from 8:24am to 9:55am and left 1,200 households without power.
Car club ÖAMTC said the outage caused many traffic lights to stop working and police had to direct traffic at junctions where traffic jams were building up.
The outage came on the heels of a short electricity outage at Vienna General Hospital (AKH) on 11 March.
AKH chief Reinhard Krepler said batteries had provided an emergency supply of electricity in critical areas and no damage had occurred during the outage, which lasted from 3:39pm to 3:50pm.
Krepler said patients had been affected by the outage mostly in terms of reduced light and malfunctioning lifts, but added everyone was able to leave.
"It is a situation that affects us once a year on average, and we are analysing its causes and examining whether we need to take measures to ensure a secure supply of electricity in the future," he added.
A defect in the Michelbeuern transmission station near the hospital might have been the cause, he noted.
