Georgian Mafia godfathers arrested in Austria

Austrian police arrested two Georgian Mafia godfathers yesterday (Mon) during internationally coordinated "Operation Java."

The Federal Crime Police (BK) said 69 people had been arrested and homes searched in six European countries - Spain, Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy and Austria - after an investigation lasting one year.

Those arrested are suspected of having engaged in drug-smuggling, money-laundering, blackmail, fraud and illegal possession of weapons.

In Spain, Operation Java is the third biggest police action against mafia groups from the former Soviet Union since 2000. Spanish police arrested around 100 suspects, most of them on the country’s southern coast.
