Over 25,000 bicycles stolen last year
More than 25,000 bicycles were pinched off Austrian streets last year, 3.5 per cent more than in 2008, the Austrian Traffic Club (VCÖ) reported today (Fri).
Of those 60 per cent were swiped in provincial capitals - 8,387 in Vienna and 2,455 in Graz. Eisenstadt saw the lowest number of bike thefts with only 15 throughout the whole year.
The club warned bicycle owners that only every 20th theft would be solved and only five per cent of stolen bicycles would be recovered by their owners.
A VCÖ spokesman said: "Preventive measures such as selection of a good storage area are very important. Unfortunately, there is a big shortage of parking places for bicycles."
He said cyclists should use a good lock to attach their bikes to strong immobile objects and use security screw devices to prevent thieves from stealing seats and front wheels.
He also suggested cyclists get their bikes insured.

I think it is lousy the way people steal bicycles in Austria. You would expect this in the USA, but not a country that is high in morality like austria. I hope you catch the thieves and hang them by the balls in your public square.
