Vienna U-Bahn pushers sentenced to prison

Two men were sentenced to prison today (Mon) for throwing each other on U-Bahn tracks in Vienna last year.

Judge Birgit Schneider heard how the men – who did not know each other – started to fight when one of them decided the other had insulted his wife on 4 April 2009.

The heavily drunk Pole threw the Turkish heroin addict onto underground railway tracks at the city’s Karls Square station.

The 21-year-old then climbed up onto the platform and pushed his rival – who suffered a broken heel bone – onto the tracks. "I only wanted revenge for the way he had attacked me," he told the judge.

No one else was injured as underground staff ordered the driver of an approaching train to stop.

The Turkish man – who had a criminal record – was sentenced to 14 months in jail. The Pole, who had not previously had a criminal record, was sentenced to five months, with another ten months suspended.
