Teens nabbed after 42 cents loot job

Three hapless teens hoping to nab a large haul were arrested after making off with less than one Euro from a Sunday paper’s cash box yesterday (Sun).

Police in Vienna’s Brigittenau district said the three 17-year-old’s forcefully opened the money-collecting box attached to one of the thousands of Sunday newspapers bags put up across Austria.

Witnesses however called police who arrested the trio on the spot.

The offenders reportedly found as little as 42 Eurocents and two Groschen – coins of the former Austrian currency Schilling replaced by the Euro in 2002 – in the box while all of the around dozen Sunday papers were "sold".

The teenagers were not kept in custody but face youth charges over the incident.

Sunday newspaper stands were introduced in Austria by late Kronen Zeitung boss Hans Dichand decades ago.

Readers are asked to insert the papers’ correct price into the attached box, but the unsecured plastic bags do not stop many from considering the offer as a free one. Others meanwhile put buttons or hoarded coins of former currencies into the slot.
