Fish in Austrian lakes and rivers are at risk due to soaring water temperatures mainly caused by global climate change, a biologist has warned.
Martin Luger and his team at the Federal Water Management Department has examined the condition and temperature of waters in the country over the past three decades.
He said today (Mon): "There has been a two degrees centigrade rise during the past 30 years. If fish can’t live in habitats they are used to, they are more likely to fall sick."
The biologist said it was difficult to predict how temperatures will develop over the next few decades. But he stressed that studies carried out so far confirm that ponds, lakes and streams are getting permanently warmer.
