Ice skating at Rathaus begins this week

Ice skating at Rathaus begins this week

The countdown has begun to the opening of Vienna’s biggest ice rink to date. In just two days' time the Vienna Rathaus will be transformed into an icy haven for all skating enthusiasts.

The Wiener Eistraum, which has provided the perfect antidote to the traditional Christmas market outside the capital’s city hall since 1996, has been under construction since 27 December. The enormous rink, which attracted more than 500,000 visitors last year, will measure 7,000 metres square, more than 1,000 square metres larger than ever before. Not only this but the winding, "dream path" for skaters through the park will also be three times as long.

As in previous years visitors to the rink will also be able to refuel at one of seven different huts around the rink serving anything from crepes to raclette and even try their hand at curling from 5pm on weekdays.

The Eistraum will open on Thursday this week at 7pm offering free ice skating to everyone on the first night. From 20 January until 4 March the rink will be open daily from 9am to 10pm.

Tickets for children will cost 4.50 Euros and 6 Euros for adults. Skates can also be rented at the rink for 6.50 Euros for adults and 4.00 Euros for children.
