Freezing temperatures claim life in Vienna

The freezing cold temperatures in Vienna, Austria claimed the life of an elderly woman over the weekend. The 86-year-old was found dead in her garden in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The emergency services were alerted at around 8.31am on Sunday morning after a neighbour spotted the elderly lady lying in her garden. "My neighbour is lying motionless in the garden, it is minus 12 degrees please come quickly," she told the police.

By the time the ambulance reached Luise F. her heart was only beating lightly and she was carried into her garden shed. The woman was not immediately taken to hospital, located just around the corner, as she was reportedly so unstable.

"Her body temperature had already cooled to 28 degrees," reported a spokesperson from the rescue team in Vienna, Ronald Packert. The team of doctors and paramedics worked for 45 minutes to revive Luise F. but their efforts were not successful.

"No one knows why the woman lay in her garden. She also had no signs of external injuries," said Packert. The partner of the woman who was later contacted could not give any explanation either. Criminal investigations are taking place into the matter.
