Tractor driver ends up in frozen pond

Tractor driver ends up in frozen pond

A man had a lucky escape yesterday evening (Tues) after his tractor ended up in a frozen pond in Türnitz, Austria. The driver had been clearing snow in his vehicle when he ended up in the freezing waters but managed to escape and call for help.

With temperatures of minus 12 degrees on Tuesday evening, the pond had become completely frozen and was covered by a layer of snow. The unsuspecting tractor driver was unaware of the pond, whilst attempting to remove snow from the surrounding area and ended up crashing through the ice. According to Christoph Pfeffer from the fire rescue in Türnitz, the man, by some miracle, was not even wet.

The driver managed to escape through the rear windscreen and alerted the emergency services. By the time they arrived he was already safe on land and completely unscathed. The tractor however had sunk up to its steering wheel and was surrounded by ice.

In the freezing temperatures the fire service began the recovery of the vehicle, using a chainsaw to cut through the 20 centimetre ice sheet on top of the pond piece by piece. The tractor was eventually dragged from the water after almost two hours.
