Investigation into helicopter crash abandoned
Prosecution have abandoned investigations into the helicopter crash on the Großvenediger summit in Hohe Tauern (East Tyrol) which killed 52-year old Alpine policeman Franz Franzeskon at the end of April last year.
Two mountain rescuers and alpine policeman were flying in the Martin 4 helicopter during a rescue operation at the end of April when a sudden fog bank appeared.
The pilot had to release the three people hanging from the rope. They plunged 10 to 15 metres and crashed to the ground. During the evacuation, Franzeskon suffered major inner injuries
The prosecution are now clear it was not a case of negligence of the pilot. It would not have been possible to expect the sudden appearance of fog, they said.
It was added that the decision to unlink the people hanging on the rope was understandable, that flying a controlled helicopter would not have been possible and that – there was a danger of crashing.
