Suitable skiing days could be down 30 percent in the future

The lack of snow that is causing difficulties in Austrian ski resorts this year could develop into a long-term problem as a research institute predicts more mild winters for the future.

Joanneum Research said on Tuesday that the coming decades could see up to 30% fewer days each year that would be unsuitable for skiing.

Although it is not possible to know for sure whether snow conditions will worsen or improve in years to come, spokesperson for Joanneum Research warned of warmer climates and said that it will get more expensive to keep producing snow.

Ski resorts in Austria have had to rely heavily on snow cannons to keep the snow levels high enough for skiing this year, although some of these cannot be used in the warmer than normal temperatures seen in January.

"More needs to be invested in snow making equipment," Franz Horl from the Austrian Ski Lift Industry said recently. "A lot of money is invested in new technology and in snowing making facilities. But in the future a further 90 - 100 million Euro have to be invested per year to improve this."
