Pair given bravery award for rescuing policemen

Pair given bravery award for rescuing policemen

By Matthias Loinig,

Vienna students Matthias Österreicher and his girlfriend Mireia Pedraes have been awarded for their courageous actions after they helped save the lives of two policemen.

The pair were given the award by Vienna Police President Dr.Gerhard Prüstel who spoke of their courageous actions after they rushed to the aid of two policemen who last year were involved in a boat crash on the Danube river in the city.

The two policemen Leopold H. und Dieter P were on the police boat ‘Fischa’ in October last year when it was rammed by the ‘Stadt Wörth’ oil tanker.

The police pair were able to save themselves with just seconds to spare by jumping into the icy cold Danube.

Matthias Österreicher and Mireia Pedraes were walking alongside of the Danube when they heard the calls for help. They rushed to the aid of the men who were suffering the effects of the cold water. The pair began immediately with first aid and called for emergency services.

As a thank you for their actions they were given a bravery award today (Weds).
