Tram driver attacked in Vienna

Tram driver attacked in Floridsdorf in Vienna

A tram driver suffered life-threatening injuries after he was attacked by a man with a knife yesterday in Floridsdorf, Vienna.

The 23-year-old was stabbed several times in the back and arm with a 12 inch knife when he was walking from his tram to take a break at around 11.30 Sunday morning. The attack is believed to be unprovoked and police think that the suspect, who has been arrested, could be suffering from a mental illness.

Witnesses detained the attacker, 52, and prevented him from running off until the police arrived at the scene at Franz-Jonas-Platz to arrest him.

The victim was taken to Lorenz-Böhler Emergency Hospital where he received surgery. He is now out of mortal danger. "It is a terrible incident," the spokesperson for his employer Wiener Linien said. "A man attacked him for no reason."
