Nine hundred cats castrated in Austria

900 cats castrated at the cost of 50K Euros

A cat castration campaign in Austria saw 900 cats neutered last year in a bid to get control over the country's growing population of stray cats.

The government shouldered the majority of the costs of the campaign, which amounted to 52,000 Euros. As well as paying for the castration of wild cats, authorities also cover half the costs of the neutering of domestic cats, with their owners covering the other half.

The number of cats castrated this year is less than previous years, with 2012 seeing around 1,200 felines neutered. However, animal welfare activists have warned against complacency and said that the results may indicate that not enough is being done.
They also said that without the campaign, it's calculated that there would be 4,800 extra cats in the country.

Owners who haven't had their cats castrated can expect a letter from authorities requesting that they make arrangements for the procedure. If they fail to arrange the procedure after receiving the letter, they can risk facing criminal proceedings from the state.
