Austrian winter was warmest on record

The past few months have been some of the warmest Winter months in Austria since records began nearly 250 yeas ago according to the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG)

Climatologist at the Institute Alexander Orlik said: "In Austria, the temperature seen this winter was 2.7 degrees above the long-term average".

The only time it has been warmer in the country between December and February was in 2006-2007 when the temperature was 3.4 degrees above average.

The highest temperature this winter was 19.1 degrees measured on 25 December at Salzburg airport. The lowest temperature was registered on 28 January 3,437 metres above sea level in Tyrol and was a chilling minus 20.7 degrees.

The warmer weather also affected animals, with bears in Lower Austria already beginning to finish their winter sleep.

The differences in rain and sunshine between regions in Austria were stark. Whereas southern Tyrol and Carinthia saw lots of rainfall, north above Salzburg and Eisenstadt there was much less rainfall than usual.

"That area saw the least rainfall since the winter of 1857/1858" said Orlik.
