New route for Vienna Marathon

Runners looking to beat their personal best marathon times should register up to this year's Vienna Marathon, which has been altered into a faster-paced route.

Taking place on 13 April the 42 km mile run is as normal winding through some of the city's most beautiful attractions but a new section between the 26th and 30th kilometre has been changed to avoid an undulating route that included several inclines. It is now a flatter and hopefully much easier section.

In tune with traditional and classical Vienna, the race is being held under the motto of "Everbody Waltz" with runners keeping up their energy to the sounds of Strauss' the Vienna Waltz on the day.

Registration for the marathon closed in early February, with around 40,000 runners due to take part on the day.

For interested spectators, there are plenty of places along the route to watch the runners go by. The marathon starts at the Vienna International Centre and leads across the Danube into the green of the Prater, along the Danube Canal to the Ringstrasse, from the Vienna State Opera right out to Schönbrunn Palace, back again to the Ring and the Prater and finally to the finish line at Heldenplatz.

As well as the full marathon, there is also a half-marathon (21km) and a relay marathon (4 runners per team). The children's competition will also take place the day before the big race.
