Austrian celebrity body builder Manfred Hoeberl who was twice voted the world's strongest man and is a friend of Arnold Schwarzenegger is facing jail after a hit-and-run car accident that left a teenager dead in Germany.
Hoeberl, 49, is from Graz, the same city as Schwarzenegger, and also claims to be a friend of the former governor of California.
He said: "Arnold is a great guy, and we also did some events together, for example starting the Arnold Classic."
But Hoeberl is now appearing before a court in Landau, Germany, accused of manslaughter after he hit a biker when driving along the road towards Loiching in Germany. Despite the fact that there had clearly been an accident and several cars had their hazard lights on – he had nevertheless driven past where he ran over the teenage biker who had fallen off his bike and was lying on the road.
After hitting the biker he had failed to stop and had dragged the fatally injured teenager along the road for another 300 meters as he sped off without stopping. The court heard that he did not have a driving licence at the time of the accident following an earlier conviction for drink-driving.
He told the court: "I heard a sound – it was like bum-bum - I didn't realise immediately that I had run over someone." When he realised what had happened he said he was in shock and sped off, but turned himself in a short while later.
The teenager died a shortly after he was taken to hospital.
The muscle man told the court that he had not seen the youngster when he overtook despite the fact that other cars had stopped and put on their hazard lights.
As well as twice being named as the world's strongest man, he also holds the Guinness book of records for having the largest arms in the world. At the 1994 Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic, his upper arms were at 26 inches, making him the first man in history to have an upper arm girth three times the size of his wrist circumference.
He was repeatedly on TV shows performing strongman stunts including the German hit TV show "you bet" where he performed stunts pulling cars and lorries, but gave up any involvement in being a professional sportsman after a serious motorbike accident in 2001 that left him disabled.
