Utopian ideals at the Mumok

By Samantha Mitchell,

In the exhibition 'The Present of the Modern Era' works from a period ranging from the classical modern era to the futurists via the early abstract artists will be featured.

The gallery is attempting to take on the question of how visual modern art is being reexamined and address the question of whether the grand utopian ideals of the 'modern age' are still relevant today.

Contemporary art held by the museum from artists such as Le Corbusier and Adolf Loos will be shown alongside newly acquired and on-loan pieces from artists such as Tom Burr, Judith Hopf, David Maljkovic and Carolee Schneemann.

Wandering through works depicting construction and design of the classical modern and contemporary eras, visitors will be able to decide for themselves whether the ideas reflected in the exhibit are still topical today.

Other artists who can be seen in the exhibition include John Baldessari, Piet Mondrian, Joan Miró, Max Ernst, Richard Gerstl and Louis Soutter.

This exhibition runs from 14 March 2014 to 8 February 2015. To find out more visit www.mumok.at.
