Tiger Woods golf ball compensation claim for Austrian

An Austrian man is hoping for a multi-million pound payout after getting whacked in the head by a golf ball teed off by Tiger Woods.

Golf fan Guenter Z, 50, from Vienna, was enjoying the final round of the World Golf Championships in Doral, Florida, when the golfing legend's opening tee shot landed squarely on his head, spurting blood over his white polo shirt.

Guenter, who is himself a passionate golfer, said that the trip to see Woods was the high point of his visit to the US that had been organised by his wife for his 50th birthday.

He said: "My wife decided to go to the beach. I was by the driving range at the start and watched Tiger Woods from there. Then I decided to go to hole number one and managed to get a place on the edge of the field where there were lots of other fans standing as well."

He said that he had then been hit on the head, leaving him covered in blood and eventually needing five stitches. The blow was so hard that photographs and video show him falling to his knee. Tiger Woods then came over and had given him a signed glove as a way of saying sorry.

Woods told the injured man that he hoped that would end the bad start to the day for both of them, but minutes later the exact same thing happened again, forcing Woods to hand over a second signed glove with an accompanying apology.

Guenter said: "I guess that he felt that for him the matter was over by handing me over the glove but I spent the rest of my holiday in the hotel in bed with incredible headaches. It basically ruined the trip completely. Everything that we planned just had to be cancelled."

Back in Vienna he contacted his lawyer Eduard Wegrostek, who is now looking for a lawyer in the US to take on the case.

Guenter added: "A signed glove as compensation is not enough. Even in amateur games it's usual to shout 'Fore' when hitting off the ball. But nobody warned me or I might possibly have been able to get out of the way. The ball was in the air for six seconds. It was negligence."

Woods ended the day with a six-over par 78, beating only two of the field's 68 players.
