Austrian poker player just misses winning spot

A poker competition that took place in Vienna this week has crowned Ukrainian poker player Oleksii Khoroshenin as champion, who beat hotly tipped Austrian Anthony Ghamrawi to the title in a tense final.

On the sixth and final day of the European Poker Tour (EPT) Khoroshenin made an impressive comeback in the game after beginning at the table in 7th position out of a total of 8 players. He started with just over 2 million chips, compared to Ghamrawi who was leading in chips at the beginning of the game with 5 million chips.

The competition took place in the Hofburg Palace in Vienna's first district, the palace originally home to the Habsburg family who once ruled the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Odds strongly favoured Austrian player Ghamrawi to finish in the top spot but a powerful performance from 27-seven-year-old Khoroshenin meant he was able to overcome Ghamrawi as they faced eachother in the final 'heads up' of the game.

Khoroshenin took home the equivalent of 419,000 EUR for his win last night with Ghamrawi settling for just over 320,000 EUR.
