Teenager dies falling off escalator

A 19-year-old man has died after an accident on the escalator at Volkstheater U-bahn station where he felt five metres to the floor.

The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning when according to witnesses the young man attempted to slide down the handrail of the escalator but slipped whilst on the rail and fell down the other side.

The teenager received first aid treatment at the scene of the incident, which took place at at 04:40 in the morning, but was taken to hospital with serious head injuries where he later was pronounced dead.

Wiener Linien have appealed to their passengers to travel safely around the public transport system. "The escalators are for walking or standing, but not for gymnastics," a spokeswoman has said.

The warning is not the first from the public transport agency who have in the past issued statements following health and safety incidents involving passengers. In December last year a man narrowly avoided injury after he tripped and fell backwards off an escalator on the U1 line but was saved because his jacket had become caught in the stairs.
